Just finished reading Basara vol. 13 (will be reading vol. 14 tomorrow) OMG. *_* I love this series. Love it. Fruits Basket is great, sweet and adorable... Hikaru no Go and Fullmetal Alchemist are engaging, funny, interesting... I still enjoy Fushigi Yuugi, and am looking forward to the Genbu Kaiden... and many other series, but.... Basara. OMG. Love it. Drama, tension, humor, plot, characterization.... such deep, rich characters, plot... This manga makes me laugh, makes me WEEP... keeps me on the edge of my seat, rooting for all the characters... hoping they survive... that despite all the terrible cruelties, the harsh realities that they face... that a "good ending" can still come of it all. It's dark, bleak, desperate at times... but hope still survives. The 'good guys' struggling so valiantly against such odds... the 'bad guys' not quite SO bad... so MANY levels of grey in this comic (metaphorically speaking).
Yes, it's an older story. Yes, the art style is VERY loose and sketchy, and certainly not "polished" by any means. But the art style works for this story. And the story rules. *__* So deep, so rich, so dramatic... Yes, I gush...
The manga might not be for everyone, but..... oy. Highly reccommended. HIGHLY. Pick it up if you can... even if it's the first three or so volumes. If you can find the anime, that covers up to vol. 3, I believe (don't quote me on it). Anyway. Rent, or whatever... gives you a bit of the taste, if you don't want to buy the manga right off. Maybe borrow it from a friend. But try it. It's a wonderful series.
