Olympic Torch Relay

So... today the Torch is running through New Westminster, and since one leg of the route is fairly close to where I am, we went off to go see the Torch come through! :3 It was fun. Awesome to see, of course. What was (somewhat) surprising is how FAST it passes by! The guy was jogging at a pretty good clip. I took a few photos, then jogged after him a short ways, to where the next trade-off was, and took a few more photos.

The corner of 6th and 8th, with people starting to gather:

There were a couple police cars driving about... motorcycles actually blocked off the route for the FEW moments the runners went past (even then, a car or two managed to slip through somehow -- boo. D:). They didn't actually block off the streets for long at all, and all too shortly after the run, things were back to normal:

One of the Torch Relay cars/vans:

One of the vans carrying the runners:

They had this little "parade"-like thing going on just in front of the relay runners, of some of the sponsors, with music and people dancing. We ended up being on the "French Side" for the Coke Vans. :/ Ah well -- it was still quite neat. :3

And finally... THERE WAS THE TORCH!! :D One of the trade-off spots was just ahead of where we were -- you can see the two torches roughly about the middle of the picture here (to the left of the bus pole):

A large trailer/van of the Torch Relay, leading the way:

Then the guy turned the corner, and jogged down the street we were waiting on. It was a thrill to see it go past. Quickly, too. xD *lol* After about two pics I quickly snapped, I jogged after him myself, ducking under a few others' cameras, still watching the torch, too, then went behind the group to run ahead a bit more. I was still behind the torch the whole way -- he was jogging at a good clip! *lol*

A little ways ahead -- not far at all, really -- was the next trade-off spot. I arrived to take the photo just after the flame had been passed on. You can see the one torch, still lit, around the right of the photo, and the new runner, with their newly-lit torch running off towards the left amidst the crowd:

Then, another van pulled up, to collect the Torch Relay jogger. :3 On the side of the van, there's an image of Quatchi, about to pass the flame on to Miga... and Muk Muk waving away from the back window. ^__~

That's pretty awesome. :) I keep waiting for them to hold a Winter Olympics around here, but...Meh, if they had one in Colorado, it would probably be in the Denver area, and that's a 7-hour drive from me. :p

And for once, I think the Olympic mascot is cute. Usually, I think they're horribly ugly, scarily ugly, but this one is positively snuggable. :)

Hmmm...Wonder if they'll stream Olympic events somewhere. I'm totally in figure skating withdrawal, since I've not had TV for...uh...7.5 years now. :)

Well, maybe they'll hold a Summer Olympics where you are! ^_^

I don't know if they'll stream the events or not. o.o You might have to check with the websites of your local stations, to see if they'll be streaming it.

And I think the mascots are adorable, too. Definately snuggable. :D If you're curious to see a little bit more about them... ^_~ (http://www.vancouver2010.com/mascot/en/meet.php)

Check the NBC website to see what they'll be streaming. I'm pretty sure they will be but you know it'll be US centric. They streamed the Summer games.

I've actually seen two relays. Summer in Los Angeles and Winter in wherever it was. Both times the torch was a block away from our house and we just walked out to see it. The kids saw the second one that went through Erie. They do go through pretty fast and you have to keep your eyes open. But it's fun and kind of inspirational.

How fun! I didn't realize there would be so many support vehicles along, but it makes sense...

I didn't expect the sponsor parade, that's for sure! xD One van to drop off the runners, and another to pick them up, yes... and maybe one more to lead the way, or such... but there were more than I expected, too. ^_^

Nice pictures. :) I heard on the radio this morning it was going to be in New Westminster today. Good to see it during daylight. I'm going to see it in Port Moody early on Thursday morning.
