nyu... tagged by [livejournal.com profile] straya for this... I know I'm a geek, and in many ways proud of it, but... this'll take some thought. ^_^;; (some of the reasons will be the same as yours, Straya ^^;)

List 5 reasons why you are a geek. And make them good reasons. Justify them. Explain them. Be loud and proud about how big of a geek you are! Then pick the 5 biggest geeks you know and have them do the meme.

1) Fan Art. One of my biggest 'geekdoms' ^^; If I am really enjoying a certain series, or game, inevitably I'll draw it. Whether they're random doodles, or pieces of art that really occupy hours of my time, I'll sketch and doodle and ink and colour away for ages, happily doing so the whole time.

I never could stop drawing. Often, in high school and then university, my teachers would wonder at the little doodles I'd always be doing in the corner of my notes. (never on anything I'd turn in ^^;) I paid attention in class, took down notes and everything, but I inevitably I'd always start sketching random stuff on the paper. (one of my high school art teachers was always boggled by this -- he kept saying he had tons of blank paper if I wanted to draw, so I wouldn't 'waste' my drawings on lined note paper... XD) It didn't distract me (much) -- in fact, sometimes it helped me to focus, just to keep my mind active. Sometimes it'd be random stuff even I didn't know what/who the drawings were of. Sometimes it'd be original characters, many of who were inspired from characters/series I was interested in X3 Fanart led me to develop my own original stories and characters. :3 But often they were quick little fanarts of stuff I was interested in at the time. ^_^

It's a creative outlet that can be immediately enjoyed and appreciated, by yourself, and others. You can find other people out there that share your own interests by posting fanart (and fanfiction), and from there you can talk and make new friends. :) Fanart can be a springboard for great things. Many people who first start drawing, start off with fanart. The characters are easy to get refrences for, and people can practice drawing them, and in that process, slowly learn how to draw. After high school, I was a 'self-taught' artist. True, I know there is a LOT more I still have to learn in drawing. A lot of people's artwork leaves me absolutely stunned by how good, and beautiful it is. But in looking at drawings from when I graduated high school, to what I can do now, I can definately see an improvement. And it was my constant drawing of fanart that slowly taught me. Practice, practice, practice... ^__~

2) Fan Fiction. Well, pretty much everything that I said about fanart, I can also say here. ^_^; I don't write as much myself, though... (years and years of writing essays in university can kind of drain a person... x_x) But I still enjoy reading fanfiction very much. :) I'm a daydreamer, and even if I don't write much of my own fanfiction, I still think up various storylines. ^_^; And reading other people's fanfiction inspires me to draw, sometimes... :D It also helps me to unwind, sometimes, with a great humor fic. I've laughed out loud a couple times, due to some great writing. And good dramas or character pieces will really make me think, grow to like and appreciate different characters in new ways. :) The range of characters I like have definately grown since reading some wonderful fanfiction about them. Writing, like drawing, is a form of freedom. You can experiment with ideas... take characters to situations and places they've never been to and explore all the possibilities... The term "IPIC" (Infinite Possibilities in Infinite Combinations) really is true, and fitting for fanfiction. Anything is possible. The only limit is the limit of your own imagination. :3

3) Transformers. It gets a 'category' all it's own... X3 I've loved the TFs since I was a little little kid. (my Dad always used to complain that my Mom was buying me 'boys toys' XD heee... she didn't care, I didn't care. X3 [and I had my 'girls toys' too, anyway. ;p]) Back on track, though. I love the TFs. The toys, the comics, the cartoon... Linked to the above two points, I've drawn fan art of them, and dabbled in fanfic of them, as well as enjoy looking at, and reading other people's fanart + fanfic. Linked to a below point, I like collecting the various little trading cards you can get of the various characters, as well as other little paraphenalia. Not just the toys; books, PVC figurines, etc. I don't collect everything that's out there, of course... XD Just the stuff I personally like and am interested in, but I'm still a big enough TF geek that anything Transformers will have me 'ooohing' and 'ahhhing' over it for a while. XD

The Transformers have become something a little more than just a "child's cartoon", after lasting so long. Even when it was originally running on TV, and the first comic run, there was more to it. It wasn't just "good guys vs. bad guys". There was a history behind these characters. Reasons why they chose the sides they did, why they chose to fight. Sometimes, the characters struggled with their roles in the war -- why they were doing certain things, questioning their roles, their abilities, themselves. It added a richness and a depth not often found in cartoons and comics geared towards kids. It made them three-dimentional, well-rounded characters, and real. They tackled some deeper issues, that censors might have (and would now) cringe at, and shy away from. They're aspects to the original G1 characters (and Beast Wars) that I've always loved.

4) Trading Cards. I love these things. ^_^ I'm not as big a trading card fan as I know a lot of people are, out there... I don't know everything about a certain series of cards, who produced them, all the varieties of cards that are out there, etc. etc... but I still enjoy collecting them. :D They're usually bright, colourful, informative/trvial, and are just a cute, small little bit of fandom I can collect. :3

I don't go in for any of the card games that are everywhere right now... c.c; That's not the sort of "trading cards" I'm talking about. ^^; The trading cards I'm talking about are the type that are produced for various anime (and some RPG) series, simply for collecting's sake. They focus on the various characters from the shows, sometimes have rare artwork, and it's fun to try and collect the whole set. :3 (though you're often left with a HELLUVA ton of duplicates, once you're through @_@) It's fun to trade them with friends, too... trying to complete your sets. :D

There are also trading cards made for some North American movies and TV shows that I've collected (such as Back to the Future and Transformers ^.~) I also have a ton of hockey cards. I'm not that big of a fan that I know all the players, their stats, etc... but I've had a few cards from when I was a kid... and I just like collecting the various hockey cards. ^.^ Must be because I'm Canadian... XD *lol*

5) RPG games. Listed here, simply because they feed my other geekdoms. ^__^;; Whether it's drawing, or fanfic... a LOT of them came from various RPG games. :3 The best RPGs are like any great novel or movie; they suck you in and engage you with their storyline and characters, drawing you into another world for a few hours at a time. It's a great way to relax and enjoy yourself. ^_^ It's engaging and exciting, and feeds your imagination. Multitudes of worlds are opened to the player to explore and interact with, and become a part of.

My first serious foray into fanart and fanfiction was because I fell so much in love with an RPG. I wanted to explore the game's story and characters more deeply. I wanted to carry the story on, after the game had ended. (fyi: the game in question is Secret of Mana, for the SNES ^^;) Back when I did write a lot of fanfiction, I had written long chapters of a novelization of the game's story, and had been developing many sequels. I have tons of fanart of the various characters from the game. I was developing a doujinshi/webcomic to compliment the fanfiction. In many ways, I still am working on those things. ^.^; I never know if those projects will ever see the light of day on the internet, but it's still something I love doing. ^_^
